Faith Shearin: Birds And Bees

When my daughter starts asking I realize
I don't know which, if any, birds
have penises. I can't picture how swans

do it. I'm even confused about bees:
that fat queen and her neurotic workers,
her children grown in cells. I'm worried

by turtles and snakes: their parts hidden
in places I have never seen. How do they
undress? Long ago, awash in college

boyfriends, I knew a little about sex.
I understood the dances and calls,
the pretty plumage. Now, I am as ignorant

as a child. We have gone to the library
to find books though I know sex
is too wild for words. The desire to be

kissed is the desire to live forever
in the mouth of pleasure. My God
I can never tell my daughter the truth.

It is a secret the way spring is a secret,
buried in February's fields. It is a secret
the way babies are a secret: hidden

by skin or egg, their bodies made of darkness.

Závada Péter: Tán

tán csak a törődés fals varázsa
hinni: valakinek jó, ha vagy
tán csak azért van szükséged másra
hogy szerethetőnek tudd önmagad

tán rátalálni sosem akartál
az se bántott volna, ha nem leled
most, hogy könnyedén tiéd lehetne, tán

Cecilia Woloch: Hex

I shut that black wing from my heart. That bad bad bird.
I slam the light. Wrong love, it flaps, wrong love.
I slit the curtains of my eyes. If one more death makes room for one more death, I’ve died enough.
I’ve died in rooms that bird screeched through, the blood-tipped feathers in my hands. The years of longing in its craw. The little claws like dangling hooks that ruined my nakedness for good.
Wrong love, it flaps, wrong love. I wave my arms to make it go.
As if the sky could take it back.
As if my heart, that box of shadows, could be locked against itself.

Dukay Nagy Ádám: Rejtőzködő életmód

Éjszaka virágzanak a kezeid.

Amikor elernyednek tagjaidban a bowdenek,
ujjaid síkötései meglazulnak
magad alá húzott,
sovány lábfejeid körül,
és ökleid görcséből
kifeslenek a gyűrt szirmok.

Amíg tested előfizetője
átmenetileg nem kapcsolható,
természetes élőhelyeden bujkálsz —
ott, ahol soha senkinek
nem sikerül lencsevégre kapnia.

Jónás Tamás: Szógyász

Kifejezetten pénzbe kerül itt minden.
Csak én maradtam ingyen.
A postaláda csapda, nyüszítenek a szórólapok.
Ők is ingyen vannak. Én is ingyen vagyok.
Szóval: én és a szórólapok.

Engem kifejezetten ki lehet használni.
Levethető vagyok, mint a szandál, mi
nt a test az erkélyről.
Március óta lemondtam a testkéjről.

Jó lenne kitenni szűrét a hiánynak.
De hiányodnak semmi, semmi nem árthat.
Szóval: semmi a hiánynak.

Iránynak ennyi.

Robert Frost: Lodged

The rain to the wind said,
'You push and I'll pelt.'
They so smote the garden bed.
That the flowers actually knelt,
And lay lodged - though not dead.
I know how the flowers felt.

Karina Borowicz: Amaryllis

Something with feathers
or possibly fangs
is curled up, raw
munching the starch
inside the bulb
in the dark drawer

or a flower waits
in the papery egg
that crackles like an onion
petals collecting themselves
in the yolk, composing
themselves from the red
and yellow glints that fall
on its shell as it drowses
by the windowsill

then, when it finally opens
there is no snake springing
from the cave of the clay pot
no sharp-shinned hawklet
building a nest laced with bones
on the cliff of my kitchen shelf

when the red fist defiantly opens
there's nothing
but opening

Imre Flóra: Maradványok

Az októberi szél meghozta hát
az ilyenkor szokásos hideget.
Feltisztult ég, csíramentes világ.
Tavaly a csönd még tele volt veled.

Vajon azóta formás, könnyű lábad
milyen város kövezetét tapossa,
s az ujjaid milyen tárgyakon járnak?
Kire világít arcod csipkebokra?

S ha látnálak is, mi maradt belőled,
s belőlem mi? És abból, hogy szerettél?
Csak a szavak, s a szégyen íze főleg.
A lélek előbb rothad el a testnél.

Gyurkovics Tibor: Áldás

Megadatott még úgy szeretnem,
ahogy még sosem szerettem,
hogy kitárom az ablakot,
és látom hogy a nap ragyog.
Hogy bedől a fény a szobámba,
a szemembe, szívembe, számba,
és én magam is ragyogok.
Megadatott.
Szikrázik, száguld rejtekem
lopódzik be a naplemente,
mielőtt lebukik a nap,
arany sisakban lássalak.
Téged, akit még úgy szeretnem
megadatott, ahogy nem szerettem
senkit se, talán csak Istent,
ki benned végül is fölismert:
hogy fény vagyok, hogy szép vagyok,
s övé vagyok.

Baranyi Ferenc: Staccato

Amíg csupán lopjuk magunknak egymást:
csak lopott holmi lesz, mi rég miénk,
vezekelünk a rég megérdemelt nász
visszaeső kis bűnözőiként,
akié vagy, elvesz naponta tőlem,
s ha néha visszakaplak egy napig:
megint sután, csak félig-ismerősen
puhatolom felejtett titkaid,
heteken át, míg várom folytatását
egy-két lopott órának, meglopok
minden varázst, mit új találkozás ád,
mert úgy kezdjük mi egyre újra, hogy
már messze vagy, mikor megérkezel.
Karomba kaplak s mégsem érlek el.

Ada Limón: How To Triumph Like A Girl

I like the lady horses best,
how they make it all look easy,
like running 40 miles per hour
is as fun as taking a nap, or grass.
I like their lady horse swagger,
after winning. Ears up, girls, ears up!
But mainly, let’s be honest, I like
that they’re ladies. As if this big
dangerous animal is also a part of me,
that somewhere inside the delicate
skin of my body, there pumps
an 8-pound female horse heart,
giant with power, heavy with blood.
Don’t you want to believe it?
Don’t you want to tug my shirt and see
the huge beating genius machine
that thinks, no, it knows,
it’s going to come in first.

Pat Schneider: I was mean to you today

Things were difficult
and I was impatient.
You were trying to explain
why I must reorganize the files
on my computer, why
they all have to have project numbers,
why I can't put them
where they've always been,
what the tax consultant said,
what you need for your report
to the Board of Directors,
and it boiled down to my files
have to be re-filed, and they
have to have titles with no more
than twelve letters to leave room
for project numbers,
and I said, Well, dammit.
And you said, Don't talk like that.

You sounded pained
and I was mean to you.
I was bored and tired
and mad, and you were
trying hard. Later,
I went out in the rain.
I went to the mall
and bought us both really
expensive pillows. Down
pillows with 100 per cent
cotton covers, 400 thread count.
I have lusted after them for years,
ever since Mama told me
that she asked Grandma,
who was 86 and dying,
"If you could have anything
in the world, what would it be?"
and Grandma answered,
"A down pillow" and Mama
didn't have enough money.
I bought two down pillows for us all,
to say, I'm sorry.

Lackfi János: Retorziók

Hányszor mondja még nekem,
hogy köszönjek annak a bácsinak,
akinek én megátalkodottan
sosem köszönök.
Mindig mondja,
hogy többször nem mondja,
hogy köszönjek annak a bácsinak,
akinek én megátalkodottan
sosem köszönök,
máskülönben most már
retorziók lesznek.
Olyanok lesznek a retorziók,
hogy legalább még két,
nem, három vagy négy olyan
bácsinak is köszönnöm kell
naponta többször, akiknek
kimondottan utálok köszönni,
és ha nekik is konzekvensen,
ismétli, konzekvensen
elmulasztok köszönni,
hát nem jövünk zavarba,
hozzáveszünk még
egy pár ilyen bácsit,
nem is gondolnám,
mennyi ilyen bácsi
szaladgál a világban,
és ha továbbra is renitens
magatartást tanúsítok,
hát egy szép napon arra ébredek,
hogy a világ összes undok bácsijának
köszönnöm kell szép sorban,
ha akarom, ha nem,
egész napom rámegy
a köszöngetésre,
le fogok fogyni,
beesett lesz az arcom, és
térdig lóg a nyelvem a köszöngetéstől,
úgyhogy még mindig
messze a legjobb üzletet kötöm,
ha itt, most, azonnal
köszönök, mondja,
ennek az egyetlen
tetves, rohadt, hányadék bácsinak.

Kiss Judit Ágnes: Tangó lemondó

Csak az az ócska kiskocsma ne fájna.
Csak az a kép ne, amit felidéz.
Csak ne volna oly édesbús emlék ez,
amin az ember hosszan elidőz.

A hiányod még most is ott a pultnál,
nyár volt, fehér ing, rajtam kék ruha,
és szinte testi jelenlétté sűrít
a vágy, hogy újra eljussak oda,

hogy ott álljunk a foltos bádogpultnál,
kezünkben egy-egy pohár Unicum,
az én arcom Mária Magdolnáé,
a tied arany hátterű ikon.

Most nincs nyár,
és lehet, hogy már nem is lesz,
csak ez a bágyadt, elkésett tavasz,
az Unicumról átszoktam a Nextre,
hisz jön a majd a következő pasas,

de addig virágzó fák látványával
égetem ki az agyamból a képet,
a fájót, hogy az ócska kiskocsmában...
szóval próbállak felejteni téged.

Szabó T. Anna: Ajándék

Az óvodából hazafelé mentünk,
ma velünk jött a fiaim barátja,
és hallom, hogy a két nagyobb beszélget:
„A Dávid azt mondta, hogy Isten meghalt!”
„Ezt Nietzsche mondta” kontráztam rá rögtön,
de rákérdeztek, és nem hagyták abba,
és ahogy próbáltam meggyőzni őket,
hogy mégsem olyan halott az az Isten,
a fiam előállt a legvégső érvvel:

a folyóba a holnapi folyót,
nem rejti el a gyertyába az égést,
az almába a gravitációt,
nem vonhat minket híg aranyba reggel,
nem díszítget fel mindent gondosan
hóval, virággal, felleggel, gyerekekkel –

pedig úgy lessük, vágyjuk rajtakapni,
eltanulni a bevált trükköket,
mert Nietzsche mondta, és Dávid is mondta,
és holtbiztos, hogy csalás az egész.

Donald Hall: The Master

Where the poet stops, the poem
begins. The poem asks only
that the poet gets out of the way.
The poem empties itself
in order to fill itself up.
The poem is nearest the poet
when the poet laments
that it has vanished forever.
When the poet disappears
the poem becomes visible.
What may the poem choose,
best for the poet?
It will choose that the poet
not choose for himself.

Anna Kamieńska: Doctor Edith Stein

Doctor Edith Stein from Breslau
flew out of a chimney at Auschwitz
on the ninth of August
of the year one thousand nine hundred
forty-two

She was going up straight and enormous into the sky
like the pillar of smoke from Abel's offering

She was silent
the best pupil of Husserl
who understood even before the master
that one should stop playing the philosopher
when God approaches

She went in silence
the wise sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
when two brown-shirt archangels
rattled on the door of the convent calling
Doctor Edith Stein

Did a short cry burst from her breast
when they tore off the black veil
of the one betrothed to the Lamb

Great Sister
I'd like to ask you so many quastions
especially when the grace of meaning
deserts the pages of days
and the leaves even of wise books

Why do you answer me stubbornly
with a simple writing of smoke
and I still afraid to understand

Rupi Kaur: Our souls are mirrors

god must have kneaded you and i
from the same dough
rolled us out as one on the baking sheet
must have suddenly realized
how unfair it was
to put that much magic in one person
and sadly split that dough in two
how else is it that
when i look in the mirror
i am looking at you
when you breathe
my own lungs fill with air
that we just met but we
have known each other our whole lives
if we were not made as one to begin with

Jónás Tamás: Csak várlak

várlak csak várlak és azt remélem
nem áll az idő csak minden héten
meg-megpihen úgy öt-hat napra
hogy magamra hagyjon és ne magadra
várlak csak várlak a terek unnak
nyitva a szemem bár minden szunnyad
kitartásom is sikert feltételez
várlak és nem tudom mihez kezdek
ha megszépül arcom a tenyerednek

Fecske Csaba: Másik meder

amit mondtál bár igaznak tűnt
és szépnek is főleg szépnek talán
nem kellett volna mondanod
mert így más mederbe terelted
ezt az egészet pedig nyilvánvaló
a természet vájta meder az igazi
szabad folyást enged a dolgoknak
és én most bizonytalan vagyok nagyon
bizonyos mértékben szomorú is holott
örülnöm kéne szavaidnak melyek önkéntelenül
szakadtak ki belőled vagy számító meggondolás
után gurítottad elém őket a boldogság ígéretével
a boldogság gyönyörű légvár amibe megilletődötten

A gittegylet minden tagja én vagyok.
Egyre íztelenedsz a fogak alatt,
és néha már magam
mögé köplek az utcán.
De te évek múltán is maradsz,
közhely leszel, és estékben-rítus,
mert így szokás, hogy magam
mellé rakjalak az ágyon.
Észre sem veszem,
az üveg szélén a gittet kapargatom,
véresek a körmeim, amikor lefekszem,
pedig már régen jól vagyok.
Kilátástalan a túl sokat tapogatott ablak.
Vannak sose múlók.

Derek Walcott: Earth

Let the day grow on you upward
through your feet,
the vegetal knuckles,

to your knees of stone,
until by evening you are a black tree;
feel, with evening,

the swifts thicken your hair,
the new moon rising out of your forehead,
and the moonlit veins of silver

running from your armpits
like rivulets under white leaves.
Sleep, as ants

cross over your eyelids.
You have never possessed anything
as deeply as this.

This is all you have owned
from the first outcry
through forever;

you can never be dispossessed.

even they can't fix
and says
it means nothing to me if he loves you
if he can't do a single wretched thing about it

Kim Addonizio: Like that

Love me like a wrong turn on a bad road late at night,
with no moon and no town anywhere
and a large hungry animal moving heavily through the brush in the ditch.
Love me with a blindfold over your eyes and the sound of rusty water
blurting from the faucet in the kitchen,
leaking down through the floorboards to hot cement.
Do it without asking,
without wondering or thinking anything, while the machinery’s
shut down and the watchman’s slumped asleep before his small TV
showing the empty garage, the deserted hallways,
while the thieves slice through the fence with steel clippers.
Love me when you can’t find a decent restaurant open anywhere,
when you’re alone in a glaring diner
with two nuns arguing in the back booth, when your eggs are greasy
and your hash browns underdone.
Snick the buttons off the front of my dress
and toss them one by one into the pond where carp lurk just
beneath the surface,
their cold fins waving.
Love me on the hood of a truck no one’s driven
in years, sunk to its fenders in weeds and dead sunflowers;
and in the lilies, your mouth on my white throat,
while turtles drag their bellies through slick mud,
through the footprints of coots and ducks.
Do it when no one’s looking, when the riots begin and the planes open up,
when the bus leaps the curb and the driver hits the brakes and the pedal sinks to the floor,
while someone hurls a plate against the wall and picks up another...

Love me like a freezing shot of vodka, like pure agave, love me
when you’re lonely, when we’re both too tired to speak,
when you don’t believe in anything...
Listen, there isn’t anything, it doesn’t matter; lie down
with me and close your eyes, the road curves here,
I’m cranking up the radio
and we’re going,
we won’t turn back as long as you love me,
as long as you keep on doing it

exactly like that.
