Charles Greenley: Poetry Swimsuit Issue

Sounds like an unsexy idea at first,
Walt Whitman arching his back with a strategically placed leaf,
or Robert Frost on the road not taken, prancing in a g-string,
but the idea sells itself, handled the right way.

Imagine the typical swimsuit issue fare:
women running on wet sand in bikinis,
topless slovakian blondes self-censoring with their hands,

and if editors can choose women with
hourglass curves and watermelon cleavage
to represent the feminine ideal,

then the poetic version could forsake the big names,
an Olds, a Clifton, or a Dove,
and pick oiled, bronzed poets to help sales.
There must be a twenty-year-old brunette
with Barbie dimensions writing poetry somewhere,
even if it’s a limerick about the Cat in the Hat.

Imagine a poet at the bookstore,
dressed in nothing but anthologies.

Imagine a poet at the library in a two-piece,
holding her book upside down.

Imagine a poet leaning over a typewriter,
her top moist with ink.

And once the pictures are taken,
after the women have selected what poems
appear next to their photo spreads,
once the issue goes to press,

we’ll be able to pinpoint the moment
poetry became cumbersome words
men thumbed past to get back to gawking,
when poetry became popular,
for the same reason most everything else does.

Kiss Judit Ágnes: Ballada a szerelmek mulandóságáról

(Beatriz de Día hagyatékából)

Meguntam a szerelmet. Ostoba

Lejár a szerelem szavatossága:
megízetlenül, megkeseredik,
s csak néznek a hajdani galambpárra,
ahogyan egymás húsát tépdesik.

Ha papír is volt, pláne esküvő,
hamar múlt lesz a nászút: Korfu, Capri,
és nem lehet elég édes cuvée
a mézeshetek mézét visszakapni.
Idegesít, pedig még meg se szólalt.
Te szólalsz meg, és rögtön áll a bál.
A gyűlölködés elnyel minden sóhajt,
és minden testi vágyat felzabál.

A válás meg tényleg óvodás játék:
az a tied lesz, de ez az enyém!
A sorsára a gyerek is úgy vár még,
mint egy bútor, könyv, konyhai edény.
Kit szerettél, halálos ellenséged
lehet, bíróság elé mész, pörölsz,
s ahogy minden rosszat feledtél régen,
most a szép emlék lesz, mit eltörölsz.

Ajánlás

Maradj egyedül. Az a tiszta helyzet.
Nem szenved tőled se társ, se gyerek.
Épp csak osztódni akartak a sejtek,
míg úgy érezted, szereted, szeret.
Az ember mégis hisz: bár torz, mi most van,
jön majd csoda. S e hitében konok.
Közben fut agyában az ősi program,
és tombolnak a győztes hormonok.

Csillag Tamás: Életkép

Megbizonyosodtunk, hogy
nincs még reggel,
megbeszéltük, hogy rosszat álmodott.
Elmesélte, hogy a sárkány
elcsente a törpök aranykincseit.
Azt mondtam, tudom,
de szerintem egy bátor kisfiú holnap
biztosan segít visszaszerezni.
Aztán mindent megnéztünk,
nevén neveztük a lámpát,
a szőnyeget, a falimatricákat,
játékokkal teli dobozokat.
Azt hiszem, aminek tudjuk a nevét,
az körbebástyáz minket.
A biztonság kedvéért
felkapcsolt villannyal aludtunk.

Ha Jin: Missed Time

My notebook has remained blank for months
thanks to the light you shower
around me. I have no use
for my pen, which lies
languorously without grief.

Nothing is better than to live
a storyless life that needs
no writing for meaning—
when I am gone, let others say
they lost a happy man,
though no one can tell how happy I was.

Jeanann Verlee: Good Girl

Every morning I sit at the kitchen table over a tall glass of water swallowing pills.
(So my hands won’t shake.) (So my heart won’t race.) (So my face won’t thaw.)
(So my blood won’t mold.) (So the voices won’t scream.) (So I don’t reach for
knives.) (So I keep out of the oven.) (So I eat every morsel.) (So the wine goes
bitter.) (So I remember the laundry.) (So I remember to call.) (So I remember the
name of each pill.) (So I remember the name of each sickness.) (So I keep my
hands inside my hands.) (So the city won’t rattle.) (So I don’t weep on the bus.) (So
I don’t wander the guardrail.) (So the flashbacks go quiet.) (So the insomnia
sleeps.) (So I don’t jump at car horns.) (So I don’t jump at cat-calls.) (So I don’t
jump a bridge.) (So I don’t twitch.) (So I don’t riot.) (So I don’t slit a strange man’s
throat.)

Tóbiás Krisztián: Milyen szép is lenne...

Milyen szép is lenne
ha a színek nem egyforma sebességgel
terjednének
hanem a sötétebbtől
a világosabbig lassulva
egyre lassabban
szép lenne
leszállnál a vonatról
és először meglátnám a pupilládat
két fekete pontot
a fehéren világító
kőzúzalékból
összelapátolt vasúti töltésen
majd a hajad
szálanként tűnnének elő
a tincsek
a sötétebbtől az egyre világosabbig
majd megérkezne a szemöldököd
és az anyajegyeid
a kis barna pöttyök
amiket már többször is megpróbáltam
feltérképezni
valószínű hogy rendszerezni kellene őket
egyszer s mindenkorra
mindet egytől egyig
lejegyzetelni
bemérni
tycho brahe temérdek füzetet teleírt
csillagkoordinátákkal
úgy kellene nekem is lejegyezni téged
minden egyes pöttyöd
majd előtűnik karod
arcod
bokád
ahol lebarnultál
a vonat ablakán keresztül
a naptól
és végül fehér ruhádat látnám meg
a szálai közé berakódott korom
már régóta sejtetett valamit
valamikor a pupillád
és a hajad sötétebb szálai között
tűntek fel
mint egy régi karcos filmen
a fénylő pontok
csak sejteni lehetett mindeddig
hogy valami lesz még ott
valami volt még ott
és csak most
mielőtt még teljes egészében meglátnálak
derülne ki
hogy fehér ruhában utaztál
a vagonok közt
kormos falak közt
hófehér ruhában
milyen szép is lenne
folyamatosan érkeznél
színről színre
és ha elmennél
mire eltűnnél
már kezdődhetne is elölről az egész
gyönyörű lenne
ülnék az állomáson
a kényelmetlen padon
ahol várok rád
minden nap
és nézném amint
előtűnsz
eltűnsz
előtűnsz
eltűnsz …

Turi Tímea: A nők testvérisége

Néha én vagyok erősebb, néha ő.
Elkapjuk a csokrot egymás esküvőjén:
elválunk, házasodunk, és elválunk újra,
furcsa sormintáink futnak egymás mellett.

Néha ő tűnik erősnek, néha más,
néha felülkerekedik, néha téved,
néha én tévedek. De komoly dolgokról
tudod, nem beszélünk. Mert ismerjük egymást,

pontosan ismerjük. Tudjuk, mitől szorul
ökölbe a gyomor. Egyek vagyunk mi
a boldog aggódásban, egyek a várásban,
egyek a magányban.

Ismeretlen mondataink fűznek egybe,
ismeretlen vállainkkal tartjuk egymást,
elkapjuk a csokrot egymás esküvőjén.
Néha ő erősebb, néha viszont pont én.

Denver Butson: Tuesday 9:00 AM

A man standing at the bus stop
reading the newspaper is on fire
Flames are peeking out
from beneath his collar and cuffs
His shoes have begun to melt

The woman next to him
wants to mention it to him
that he is burning
but she is drowning
Water is everywhere
in her mouth and ears
in her eyes
A stream of water runs
steadily from her blouse

Another woman stands at the bus stop
freezing to death
She tries to stand near the man
who is on fire
to try to melt the icicles
that have formed on her eyelashes
and on her nostrils
to stop her teeth long enough
from chattering to say something
to the woman who is drowning
but the woman who is freezing to death
has trouble moving
with blocks of ice on her feet

It takes the three some time
to board the bus
what with the flames
and water and ice
But when they finally climb the stairs
and take their seats
the driver doesn’t even notice
that none of them has paid
because he is tortured
by visions and is wondering
if the man who got off at the last stop
was really being mauled to death
by wild dogs.

Louis McKee: What Cowboys Know About Love

Last night on the sports channel
I watched the rodeo.
Those cowboys have it right;
the best and the beauty of it.
You cannot win, so you ride
for as long as you can and enjoy it.
When you dismount,
whether it be on your own or not,
it won’t look pretty. You’ll limp off.
But you’ll feel good; your heart
will be pounding like it never has,
and walking away, one crazy step
after another, your ears will ring
with the loud approval
of those who never felt so good.

A szeretettel nem tudok mit kezdeni – – –
Tartsanak el, és hízelegjenek,
de ugyanakkor hagyjanak békén,
küldjenek pénzt postán.
Azt is unom, hogy hízelegjenek.
Veszitsenek el nagyobb összeget az utcán,
amit én majd véletlenül megtalálok.
Legyenek elragadtatva tőlem a hátam mögött,
hogy én tényleg egészen véletlenül visszahalljam
valakitől, aki nem is tudja, hogy rólam beszél.
Irassák rám a házukat, és haljanak meg.

Ed Pilolla: Favorite Mug

Your day is like your favorite mug.
You fill it with the necessary stuff
to survive in this world.
Those days
let me be the seasoning.
Other days I get to fill it with your favorite brew
as well as mine,
vanilla and chai leaves and
inside jokes
and a dollop of raw honesty
and honey.

I will gently blow on your day
when it's too hot,
cup my hands to share in this warmth
and fill it with spirits along the way.
Never will I leave your mug
on the countertop with coffee grounds
at the bottom for days.

Don't judge me by my propensity to blast Van Halen
or how I casually enter the bathroom
to brush my teeth while you're peeing
and not pick up on that unhappy look on your face.
Judge me instead by how I thread my fingers through the handle
of your day,
lift the rim of your world to my lips
and drink in your story.

Charles Bukowski: The Genius of the Crowd

there is enough treachery, hatred violence absurdity in the average
human being to supply any given army on any given day

and the best at murder are those who preach against it
and the best at hate are those who preach love
and the best at war finally are those who preach peace

those who preach god, need god
those who preach peace do not have peace
those who preach love do not have love

beware the preachers
beware the knowers
beware those who are always reading books
beware those who either detest poverty
or are proud of it
beware those quick to praise
for they need praise in return
beware those who are quick to censor
they are afraid of what they do not know
beware those who seek constant crowds for
they are nothing alone
beware the average man the average woman
beware their love, their love is average
seeks average

but there is genius in their hatred
there is enough genius in their hatred to kill you
to kill anybody
not wanting solitude
not understanding solitude
they will attempt to destroy anything
that differs from their concepts
not being able to create art
they will not understand art
they will consider their failure as creators
only as a failure of the world
not being able to love fully
they will believe your love incomplete
and then they will hate you
and their hatred will be perfect

like a shining diamond
like a knife
like a mountain
like a tiger
like hemlock

their finest art

Billy Collins: Breathless

Some like the mountains, some like the seashore,
Jean-Paul Belmondo says
to the camera in the opening scene.

Some like to sleep face up,
some like to sleep on their stomachs,
I am thinking here in bed–

some take the shape of murder victims
flat on their backs all night,
others float face down on the dark waters.

Then there are those like me
who prefer to sleep on their sides,
knees brought up to the chest,

head resting on a crooked arm
and a soft fist touching the chin,
which is the way I would like to be buried,

curled up in a coffin
in a fresh pair of cotton pajamas,
a down pillow under my weighty head.

After a lifetime of watchfulness
and nervous vigilance,
I will be more than ready for sleep,

so never mind the dark suit,
the ridiculous tie
and the pale limp hands crossed on the chest.

Lower me down in my slumber,
tucked into myself
like the oldest fetus on earth,

and while the cows look over the stone wall
of the cemetery, let me rest here
in my earthy little bedroom,

my lashes glazed with ice,
the roots of trees inching nearer,
and no dreams to frighten me anymore.

Kiss Judit Ágnes: Se megírni, sem elhallgatni

Ha már közhely, végképp közhely legyen
meg- vagy körülírni, mit jelent nekem,
hogy belém szivárogtál a repedéseken
át, és ha magamban, benned lépkedek.

Érintésedet, mint szájpadlás a nyelvét,
jól ismerem, nedvesen és vakon
jársz bennem, s ha változnék, éppúgy megéreznéd,
mint nyelv a szájban
a láthatatlan, apró hólyagot.

milyen megadás, milyen küzdelem;
a vergődést, mint a vadállat
a csapdában, és amit semmi
nem csillapít: vágyat és bosszúvágyat.
Meztelen vagyok és fegyvertelen.

Mint keretéből a képet, próbálom
ezt a verset a formából
kifeszegetni, ne legyen se rím,
se mérték, ha ilyen mértéktelen
a kötődés, talán a szerelem,
de hiába. Úgy visszaránt a jambus,
mint ebet a lánc (így tán nem harap) –
a szabadság nekem túl nagy falat.

Hát leszek rab, és leszek áldozat,
még látszat sincs, még meg se tudlak csalni,
mélyemben zakatolsz, mint a vonat
az alagútban. Hallgatom, hagyom.
Belülről ismersz, mint edényt a víz,
és nem tehetek semmit ellened,
csak függök rajtad, akár egy kereszten,
ahogy a versem függ a rímein.
Lázadni vagy feladni egyre megy,
aki vagyok, az győzött, én elestem,
fegyvertelen és meztelenül állok,
s a mindig felbuggyanó kívánságot,
hogy elfelejtselek örökre, sem
megélni, sem megírni nem merem.

Gergely Ágnes: Szeretek várni rád

Eső kering az utcán, s idebent
a lámpa körül gyűrűzik a csend,
ahogy ülök és várlak.
Nincs más világ: magamba búvom el.
Ilyenkor nem hiszem, hogy látni kell,
ilyenkor óriás vagyok,
aki elég magának,
lebegek fönn, a csont-palack felett
és az sem érdekel,
hogy kerek szemmel figyelnek a tárgyak.

Ülök és várlak.
Mióta várok így?

Emlékszem, meggyűltek az évek,
feltornyosult a megvárattatás,
közben mosoly fürösztgetett, közelség,
jószó, szívesség és kézfogás,
lassanként gyanús lettem önmagamnak
s előrebukván a jövő felé
(hogy ki jön még és ki az, aki nem jön)
belémfagyott a maradék lehellet
és meggyűlöltem, akit várni kellett –

és most eszméletem hideg falára
kikönyökölve nézek innét,
s mint az igazi boldogok,
a tétovázó ifjúságra
s a lépteidre gondolok.

Te vagy bennem a bizonyosság,
az önvédelem és a gőg,
a különbség, az azonosság,
a fejtartás mások előtt.
Ha jössz, a padló is megéled,
körvonalat kap a világ,
a tárgyak előrefeszülnek,
türelmük szétveti az ajtót,
lebiccenő fejem fölött
a lámpa lélegző virág,
jaj, nézd, hogy szeretek,
szeretek várni rád,

nézd, én, az egykori csavargó,
hogy ülök itt, nyugalmi lázban,
e mozdulatlan mozdulásban,
ülök és várlak, várlak –
állj meg! egy perccel előbb, mint belépsz,
még felmutatlak a világnak.

Ronald Koertge: Sidekicks

They were never handsome and often came
with a hormone imbalance manifested by corpulence,
a yodel of a voice or ears big as kidneys.

But each was brave. More than once a sidekick
has thrown himself in front of our hero in order
to receive the bullet or blow meant for that
perfect face and body.

Thankfully, heroes never die in movies and leave
the sidekick alone. He would not stand for it.
Gabby or Pat, Pancho or Andy remind us of a part
of ourselves,

the dependent part that can never grow up,
the part that is painfully eager to please,
always wants a hug and never gets enough.

Who could sit in a darkened theatre, listen
to the organ music and watch the best
of ourselves lowered into the ground while
the rest stood up there, tears pouring off
that enormous nose.

Sarah Kay: “B” (If I Should Have a Daughter)

If I should have a daughter, instead of mom, she’s going to call me Point B,

because that way she knows that no matter what happens,
at least she can always find her way to me.

And I am going to paint the Solar Systems on the backs of her hands,
so she has to learn the entire universe before she can say ‘Oh, I know that like the back of my hand’

And she’s going to learn that this life will hit you,
hard,
in the face,
wait for you to get back up, just so it can kick you in the stomach
but getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air.

There is hurt, fear that cannot be fixed by band aids or poetry
so the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman isn’t coming
I’ll make sure she knows she does not have to wear the cape all by herself
because no matter how wide you stretch your fingers,
your hands will always be too small to catch all the pain you want to heal.

Believe me, I’ve tried

And baby, I’ll tell her, don’t keep your nose up in the air like that
I know that trick, I’ve done it a million times
You’re just smelling for smoke so you can follow the trail
back to a burning house so you can find the boy who lost everything in the fire
to see if you can save him.

Or else find the boy who lit the fire in the first place to see if you can change him
But I know she will anyway, so instead, I’ll always keep an extra supply of chocolate
and rainboots nearby.

Because there is no heartbreak that chocolate can’t fix.
Ok, there’s a few heartbreaks that chocolate can’t fix,
but that’s what the rainboots are for because rain will
wash away everything if you let it.

I want her to look at the world through the underside of a glass bottomed boat
To look through a microscope at the galaxies that exist on the pinpoint of a human mind
Because that’s the way my mom taught me.

That there’ll be days like this
that there’s be days like this my mama said
When you open your hands to catch, and wind up with only blisters and bruises.
When you step out of the phone booth and try to fly

And the very people you want to save are the ones standing on your cape
When your boots will fill with rain and you’ll be up to your knees in disappointment
and those are the very days you have all the more reason to say thank you

because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop
kissing the shoreline no matter how many times it is sent away.

You will put the win in winsome … lose some
You will put the star in starting over and over.

And no matter how many landmines erupt in a minute
be sure your mind lands on the beauty of this funny place called life.
And yes, on a scale from one to overtrusting, I am pretty damn naive.

But I want her to know that this world is made out of sugar.
It can crumble so easily.
But don’t be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it.
Baby, I’ll tell her, remember your mama is a worrier
and your papa is a warrior.

And you’re the girl with small hands and big eyes who never stops asking for more.
Remember that good things come in threes and so do bad things and
always apologize when you’ve done something wrong

but don’t you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining,
your voice is small but don’t ever stop singing.

And when they finally hand you a heartache,
when they slip war and hatred under your door and offer you handouts on street corners
of cynicism and defeat, you tell them that
they
really ought to meet your mother.

Nádasdy Ádám: A tavon át

Dobol, mint csendes basszus a tavon át,
nincs dallama és nincs harmóniája
a távollétednek, csak üt, belül,
a szívben, koponyában, ingben, gatyában,
megmarkol váratlanul, ha befordulok
az előszobába, odaszögez a dobolás,
nincs szava, nincs üzenete
a távollétednek, csak súlya van,
dobol, kopog távoli koponyánkon,
ujjbegyeim a semmibe, puhán
cirógatnak, ahogy befordulok
az előszobába, szagolgatom
a pulóveredet, a tavon át
úszol felém, csak most, most meg ne fulladj.

Charles Bukowski: Lost

they say that hell is crowded, yet,
when you’re in hell,
you always seem to be alone.
& you can’t tell anyone when you’re in hell
or they’ll think you’re crazy
& being crazy is being in hell
& being sane is hellish too.

those who escape hell, however,
never talk about it
& nothing much bothers them after that.
I mean, things like missing a meal,
going to jail, wrecking your car,
or even the idea of death itself.

when you ask them,
“how are things?”
they’ll always answer, “fine, just fine…”

once you’ve been to hell and back,
that’s enough
it’s the greatest satisfaction known to man.

once you’ve been to hell and back,
you don’t look behind you when the floor creaks
and the sun is always up at midnight
and things like the eyes of mice
or an abandoned tire in a vacant lot
can make you smile
once you’ve been to hell and back.

Turi Tímea: Minden mondat

Bizonyos szavak csak utólag sértenek, mint
a nem várt udvarlás. Olyan megszokhatatlan
a másnemű figyelme: zavaró a bók, a társasági,
a formaság mindig olyan hazug, és zavaró a bók,
ha elmarad. Az őszinteség pedig megsebez.
Minden, amit kimondok, másik ajtó.
Mindent megkésve rontok el, mintha minden
mondat csak az én hibáimról beszélne,
és árulás volna, ha mégsem így.
