Elinor Wylie: Pretty Words

Poets make pets of pretty, docile words:
I love smooth words, like gold-enamelled fish
Which circle slowly with a silken swish,
And tender ones, like downy-feathered birds:
Words shy and dappled, deep-eyed deer in herds,
Come to my hand, and playful if I wish,
Or purring softly at a silver dish,
Blue Persian kittens fed on cream and curds.
I love bright words, words up and singing early;
Words that are luminous in the dark, and sing;
Warm lazy words, white cattle under trees;
I love words opalescent, cool, and pearly,
Like midsummer moths, and honied words like bees,
Gilded and sticky, with a little sting.

Susan Browne: In the Art Gallery

The painting of flowers
next to the painting of flames,
and I remember that time, years ago,
when the psychiatrist said, "You feel too much,
you are too sensitive, take these,"
giving me a bottle of pills.  I took them
to the beach, watched light become flame
on the water, and along the ragged cliffs,
small flowers like blue stars,
the world a painting
I couldn't live in.
I opened the bottle, then put it down,
pills spilling on the sand.
Waves carried the flames
and didn't mind the burning,
the arising from and disappearing
into the vastness.  I swam,
let the waves take me,
then treaded water, looking at the sky,
a silver tray full
of the most beautiful nothing.
I swam back, the water was black,
I could sink beyond caring,
but I wanted to live,
to be there
with the beauty and the burning
and let it be too much.

Villányi László: Akkor

Ha csak akkor látlak először, s csak
annyit, hogyan guggolsz le a kiskutyához,
aki megállt előtted, s felkínálta magát;
ha csak kezedet látom, a simogatást,
amilyen gyengédséggel játszanak ujjaid
a kutya testén, megszeretlek már akkor is.

Linda Gregg: Kept Burning and Distant

You return when you feel like it,
like rain.  And like rain you are tender,
with the rain's inept tenderness.
A passion so general I could be anywhere.
You carry me out into the wet air.
You lay me down on the leaves
and the strong thing is not the sex
but waking up alone under the trees after.

Agnieszka Osiecka: A félelem

A félelemben
mintha otthon lennék.
Ismerek minden kapcsolót,
mélyedést,
zugot.
Hallom a felvonót.
Telefonom is van.
Csupán a kijárati ajtó
nincs sehol.

először felkiáltójellel a végén,
de azt töröltem inkább,
nehogy felébresszen.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox: Worth While

It is easy enough to be pleasant,
When life flows by like a song,
But the man worth while is one who will smile,
When everything goes dead wrong.

For the test of the heart is trouble,
And it always comes with the years,
And the smile that is worth the praises of earth
Is the smile that shines through tears.

It is easy enough to be prudent,
When nothing tempts you to stray,
When without or within no voice of sin
Is luring your soul away;

But it's only a negative virtue
Until it is tried by fire,
And the life that is worth the honor of earth
Is the one that resists desire.

By the cynic, the sad, the fallen,
Who had no strength for the strife,
The world's highway is cumbered to-day;
They make up the sum of life.

But the virtue that conquers passion,
And the sorrow that hides in a smile,
It is these that are worth the homage on earth
For we find them but once in a while.

Ted Kooser: A Rainy Morning

A young woman in a wheelchair,
wearing a black nylon poncho spattered with rain,
is pushing herself through the morning.
You have seen how pianists
sometimes bend forward to strike the keys,
then lift their hands, draw back to rest,
then lean again to strike just as the chord fades.
Such is the way this woman
strikes at the wheels, then lifts her long white fingers,
letting them float, then bends again to strike
just as the chair slows, as if into a silence.
So expertly she plays the chords
of this difficult music she has mastered,
her wet face beautiful in its concentration,
while the wind turns the pages of rain.

Kiss Judit Ágnes: Kárpedíem

Az a tény, hogy
megöregszel,
nem ijeszt, ha
belegondolsz?
Csupa ránc lesz
bababőröd,
napozáskor
ki akarná
olajokkal
kenegetni?

Nyakad ívét
se leled majd,
ki se látszik
a tokából.
Derekad meg
ha a hájból
igyekeznél
kikutatni,
feladod, mert
belefáradsz.

Ne habozz hát,
ne hivatkozz
az erényre,
gyere, vetkőzz,
hogy a tested
simogassa,
vegye kézbe,
akinek kell.
Hiszen elszáll,
ami szép volt
s mi marad meg?
Csak az emlék.

Rebecca Baggett: Testimony

(for my daughters)

I want to tell you that the world
is still beautiful.
I tell you that despite
children raped on city streets,
shot down in school rooms,
despite the slow poisons seeping
from old and hidden sins
into our air, soil, water,
despite the thinning film
that encloses our aching world.
Despite my own terror and despair.

I want you to know that spring
is no small thing, that
the tender grasses curling
like a baby's fine hairs around
your fingers are a recurring
miracle. I want to tell you
that the river rocks shine
like God, that the crisp
voices of the orange and gold
October leaves are laughing at death,

I want to remind you to look
beneath the grass, to note
the fragile hieroglyphs
of ant, snail, beetle. I want
you to understand that you
are no more and no less necessary
than the brown recluse, the ruby-
throated hummingbird, the humpback
whale, the profligate mimosa.
I want to say, like Neruda,
that I am waiting for
"a great and common tenderness",
that I still believe
we are capable of attention,
that anyone who notices the world
must want to save it.

Jászberényi Sándor: Minden rendben

A négyes-hatos villamosra vártam.
Hallgattam: az éjjel elterült lazán,
s fel se tűnt a kölcsön bőrkabátban,
hogy fagyni kezdett és elkékült a szám.
A villamos meg csak nem akart jönni.
"Nem baj" - gondoltam. "Nincs vonaljegyem.
Nem vár senki. Nincs mivel törődni -
Esetleges, mi történhet velem."
A körút mellett minden bérlakásban
az összes alvó fogcsikorgatott,
s összeadta szépen önmagában,
hogy álmából levesbe aznap mit rakott.
Gyalog sétáltam egészen hazáig.
Fázni kezdtem. A körút gyorsított velem,
figyeltem szedált országom, hogy ásít,
majd tűnődtem, hogy mit jelent nekem.

Az én hazám nem hordoz pluszjelentést,
de megmondja, hogy súlyom hány kiló,
hogy nem vagyok eléggé jó keresztény,
és nem vagyok eléggé jó zsidó.
Hogy bárhogy élek, nem lesz semmi könnyebb -
Vágyam sincs, hogy szívem hajtsa szét.
Nehézkes, átizzadt érdekek jelölnek,
és én vagyok már minden csőcselék.
Az utcán, hogyha bárki szembejönne,
amit szeretne, azt tehet velem,
bevett dolog, hogy így jutunk mi többre -
akárki megkap áfamentesen.
Hazaérek. Minden növényem él még.
A bérlakás szelíden rám köszön.
A boldogságot nézem még a tévén -
Van tiszta ágyam, van néhány söröm.

James Henry Leigh Hunt: Abou Ben Adhem

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight of his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:-
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the presence in the room he said,
'What writest thou?' - The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered 'The names of those who love the Lord.'
'And is mine one?' said Abou. 'Nay, not so,'
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still; and said 'I pray thee then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow-men.'
The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names who love of God had blessed,
And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.

Denise Levertov: The Fountain

Don't say, don't say there is no water
to solace the dryness at our hearts.
I have seen

the fountain springing out of the rock wall
and you drinking there. And I too
before your eyes

found footholds and climbed
to drink the cool water.

The woman of that place, shading her eyes,
frowned as she watched-but not because
she grudged the water,

only because she was waiting
to see we drank our fill and were
refreshed.

Don't say, don't say there is no water.
That fountain is there among its scalloped
green and gray stones,

it is still there and always there
with its quiet song and strange power
to spring in us,

up and out through the rock.

Vér Georgina Mirtill: óvóhely

emlékszem egyszer éjszaka hátat
fordítottál álmodban és én csak néztem
ahogy félelmeid tarajos hegycsúcsokként
emelkednek a gerinced mentén akkor
értettem meg igazán hogy a közösen
eltöltött időben nem mindig csupán az én
perifériáimra utazunk hogy benned is addig
ismeretlen helyeket fedezünk fel minden
alkalommal hogy azzal a paneltetők közötti
csókkal egymásba nyitottunk vészkijáratot
és hogy ennyi év után is lerombolhatatlan
óvóhelyed vagyok

Maggie Anderson: Heart Labor

When I work too hard and then lie down,
even my sleep is sad and all worn out.
You want me to name the specific sorrows?
They do not matter.  You have your own.
Most of the people in the world
go out to work, day after day,
with their voices chained in their throats.
I am swimming a narrow, swift river.
Upstream, the clouds have already darkened
and deep blue holes I cannot see
churn up under the smooth flat rocks.
The Greeks have a word, paropono,
for the complaint without answer,
for how the heart labors, while
all the time our faces appear calm
enough to float through in the moonlight.

Tony Hoagland: Migration

This year Marie drives back and forth
from the hospital room of her dying friend
to the office of the adoption agency.

I bet sometimes she doesn't know
what threshold she is waiting at --

the hand of her sick friend, hot with fever;
the theoretical baby just a lot of paperwork so far.

But next year she might be standing by a grave,
wearing black with a splash of
banana vomit on it,

the little girl just starting to say Sesame Street
and Cappuccino latte grande Mommy.
The future ours for a while to hold, with its heaviness --

and hope moving from one location to another
like the holy ghost that it is.

Dékány Dávid: Banánzöld

Kihangosítottalak, a telefon az arcomon,
alapvetően nincs igazad, de nem szólok közbe,
részeg vagy, kábé egy hónapja nem beszéltünk,
és most igazából mindegy is, mit mondasz,

a járda túloldalára, a sövény biztonságába.

pulóveremben jársz futni a parkba,

felismerem a kapu nyitásának hangját,
aztán a lépteidet a második emeletre,
most meg a villanykapcsolót.
Mert most leteszem.

Trevor Hewett: The patchwork woman

Mid-afternoon, in fading Autumn light:
lank-haired, green-shoed, in a flesh-coloured plastic mac,
red skirt and gingham shirt, the patchwork woman
drifts past me to the crossing on my right.
A skirl of brakes attracts my eye. She stands
half way across the road, stock-still. Her hands
hang at her sides, her face is calm but her eyes
betray her. There, in a navy blue sedan,
throttle revving, sits a modern man:
mid-thirties, wearing matching suit and tie
and haircut. Angry, staring, hurried, late,
he grips the wheel and mutters liquid hate.
The car strains like the pole car on the grid
but still she stands and, with a frightened smile,
mouths “Thank you” and then shuffles on her way,
not seeing what her gratitude just did -
for he has melted and is smiling too.
His eyes pursue her as she wanders through
the shoppers in her pink, distinctive mac;
never looking back.

Edna St Vincent Millay: I think I should have loved you presently (Sonnet IX)

I think I should have loved you presently,
And given in earnest words I flung in jest;
And lifted honest eyes for you to see,
And caught your hand against my cheek and breast;
And all my pretty follies flung aside
That won you to me, and beneath your gaze,
Naked of reticence and shorn of pride,
Spread like a chart my little wicked ways.
I, that had been to you, had you remained,
But one more waking from a recurrent dream,
Cherish no less the certain stakes I gained,
And walk your memory’s halls, austere, supreme,
A ghost in marble of a girl you knew
Who would have loved you in a day or two.

Majláth Ákos: Érintő

Úgy képzeltem,
koncentrikus körök leszünk.
Te a kisebb, én aki átölel.
Valahogy mégis
rajtam kívül estél.
Épp, hogy egy
közös érintőnk van,
de az pont elég.
Majd rajta keresztül húzok
origóból origóig
egy vektort.
Irányok és normák nélkül,
centrális egyenest.
Nálam van a kezdőpontod,
szólj rám, ha megtaláltad,
hol végződödöm.

Hal Sirowitz: Reusing Words

Don’t think you know everything,
Father said, just because you’re good
with words. They aren’t everything.
I try to say the smallest amount possible.
Instead of using them indiscriminately
I try to conserve them. I’m the only one
in this household who recycles them. I
say the same thing over & over again,
like “Who forgot to turn out the lights?
Who forgot to clean up after themselves
in the bathroom?” Since you don’t listen
I never have to think of other things to say.

Ezüst cipőben jár a Hold
Kigyúl a légi lámpabolt
Ott fönn lakik mind aki volt
Kék függönyön sok égi folt

Aki volt annak ott van ágya
Ágya fejénél ég a lámpa
Feje alatt a párna felhő
Mikor fény gyúl az árnya megnő

Itt lenn is árnyékok a fák
Aki elalszik messze lát
Aki ott fönn van messze néz
Csurog le ránk a lámpaméz

Laura Kasischke: Things That Have Changed Since You Died

We can talk to one another on telephones
in banks, in cars, in line. No more
sitting on the floor
attached to a cord
while everybody listens.
No more
standing outside the booth
in the cold, fingering
an adulterous dime. We

send each other mail without stamps.
Watch television without antennas.
Wear seatbelts, smoke less, and never
on a bus, never
in the lobby while we’re waiting
for the lawyer to call on us.

Nowhere now, a typewriter ribbon.
Quaintly the record album’s scratch and spin.
Our groceries, scanned.
Pump our own gas.
Take off our shoes
before boarding our plane.
Those towers: Gone. And Pluto’s
no longer a planet:
Forget it.
I could go on

and on, but you’re still dead
and nothing’s any different.

Wendell Berry: A Spiritual Journey

And the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles,
no matter how long,
but only by a spiritual journey,
a journey of one inch,
very arduous and humbling and joyful,
by which we arrive at the ground at our feet,
and learn to be at home.
