Joseph Fasano: To a Life in Despair

Don't. Don't go to the bridge.
Don't wake in your coat in the morning light
and carry those stones into the river.
Don't find your father's pistol
in the attic, hidden in the family albums.
Don't. Don't pour the pills
into the whiskey, the walls dissolving
like your childhood. Don't, just don't choose
not to wake.

Stay. Just stay.
Tell yourself you'll do it tomorrow.
You can always walk alone into the darkness.
But not yet. Not yet. Not this soon.
I don't have a reason
to give you. All I have
is the morning, and the autumn wind,
and the child you once were
in the darkness, looking at the new moon
through the ruins, saying
save me, save me, save me,
and the moon looking back
with her vacant
face
saying I promise, I stone-
cold promise
that the face of utter
hopelessness
is the face of something just about to change.

Sárhelyi Erika: Láncra vert órák

Ilyentájt, a mélyülő őszben
meglassul a folyvást futó idő,
mint mikor éppen elmenőben,
az ajtóban megtorpan a cipő,

a távozó kesztyűt, sálat vesz,
a percek is nagykabátba vágynak,
s míg halkan csordogál az eresz,
súlya lesz egyszerre a mának.

Hisz’ minap hajadonfőtt szaladt
még egy szimpla hétköznap délután,
most meg-megáll a felhők alatt
széltől szédelegve és tétován,

nézi, mint zuhan le az este
az esőtől fénylő kövezetre,
s fáradt, súlyos, időtlen teste
mintha megdermedt ólomból lenne.

A tegnap, ha kicsit kilépne,
utolérné a lomha holnapot.
Így kúsznak a napok a télbe,
láncra vert órák csak a nappalok.

Joseph Fasano: Instructions for Having a Soul

Take it out in the rain sometimes.
It has vast, invisible wings that gather dirt
and need rinsing.
When it tries to kill you
that is because you've forgotten
to let it look into someone's eyes
for longer than a minute.
It needs that the way a bee needs nectar
in the early morning dew.
Every so often, take it on a journey.
Let it read long, hard books
and let it stare into the depths of the sea.
Yes, you can give it chips and whiskey
but from time to time let it kneel
in a place that is holy
like the simple cathedral of the willows.
All it wants is to live, to keep becoming.
Nourish it, and it puts down roots, it opens.
But starve it, and the mind, the flesh is empty;
the world breaks down; symphonies go unwritten;
the rockets fall; the children die
in flames.
Listen. It is not too late
to wake it. Say the names
of the wild, the forgotten things:
bluebird, red wolf, robin; violet, child, clover.
You cannot save the world but you can open
the window for the trapped wren in the cellar.
Read a book to a blind man, to your father.
Tell a child you do believe her anger.
Make your life the first life that you save.

szalad a havas fák közül szaladna a melegbe

konyhai boszorkány sikít krumplit pucol a kislány

miféle fa áll a szívében ágakkal sose lombbal

Brian Bilston: Last Minute Christmas Shopping

You get the myrrh, the other two had said -

which was all very well
but it was now nearly six o'clock
and the shops were absolutely rammed
because it was Christmas Eve -

at least it would be in a few centuries
once the annual festival of Christmas had established itself -

and quite frankly, he was tired and fed up
having had one hell of a journey
just getting himself to Bethlehem
what with the saddle rash
and the traffic on the ring road outside Damascus,
and the neck ache from looking up at that star all the time,
and losing that ruby out of his best crown,

and that slightly superior air
Caspar and Melchior would always show towards him
which made him feel like a dullard,

and the fact it had taken him so long to park his camel
that most of the shops had started to close,
and that he kept on losing his bearings,
he'd walked down this street maybe three times already
yet he was still non the wiser,
and neither was he any closer to getting some myrrh
and talking of which,
wjat the hell even was stupid myrrh, anyway?

Shel Silverstein: Mindennel

Kértem egy hotdogot
mindennel,
hiba volt, mert nekem
így nem kell.
Lett benne radír,
és nyakkendős tapír,
és parketta, müzli és csésze,
és papucs meg festék,
ha kell, edd meg, tessék,
én köszönöm, nem kérem mégse.

Simon Réka Zsuzsanna: Apa kacagás

Ha apát lerajzolom,
mindig fülig ér a szája,
mert apa egy fülig érő kacagás.
Becsukott szemmel,
álmában is kacag.
Akkor is,
ha nem hallatszik.
Odakuporodik
a szívébe
a sok kacagás,
és ha a közelében vagyok,
a
kacagása
nagyon
ragadós.
