Jared Singer: Rise

I have always thought we learned the wrong lesson
from Icarus. Who cares about the fall. Who cares
if our wings melt. Who cares if we smash our bodies
into the ground. Who cares if we die

broken. Our life is not defined by our last moment.
Having nothing left does not make us a failure.
We are defined entirely by how far we reach.

And Icarus, that beautiful, enviable, glorious failure,
reached for the sun. He sought light and enlightenment
with his whole being.

His fahter gave him a humble gift, said you can touch the sky,
but only for a moment; don't stray too far. Icarus responded--

I can touch the sky.
I will live there for the rest of my life.
I will kiss the moon.
I will ride the sun.
