Kemény Lili: Fényszennyezés

Végülis mindenhova kell
egy háziasszony. Ennek itt
például Európa csak a nappalija.
A haján milliárd éves
fények pihennek meg,
messzi csillagokról utaztak,
hogy elérjenek hozzá.
A fogsora tökéletes
sorozatfelvétel a holdról,
Akire csak pillantást vet,
az úgy érzi magát, mint a
diszkóreflektorokkal
csiklandozott júliusi égbolt.

Néha mély lesz és tanácstalan,
vigasztalásra szoruló, („Jaj,
megöregszenek! lassan
megöregszenek a szüleink”)
gyere, mondják neki,
sírj nyugodtan,
és ő nyugodtan sír.

Anna Akhmatova: Ott találkoztam utolszor veled

Ott találkoztam utolszor veled
a parton, ahol csavarogtunk néha.
A város áradástól rettegett-
szilajul nyargalt, nőttön nőtt a Néva.

Nyárról beszéltél, s arról, hogy nőt
költőnek elképzelni - lehetetlen.
A cári lak s a Péter-Pál –erőd
örökre ittmaradt szememben.

Nem is miénk volt már a levegő,
ajándéknak éreztük, ég kegyének.
Az én szívemből akkor tört elő
a legutolsó esztelen-vad ének.

Kakinomoto no Hitomaro: When She Was Still Alive

When she was still alive
We would go out, arm in arm,
And look at the elm trees
Growing on the embankment
In front of our house.
Their branches were interlaced.
Their crowns were dense with spring leaves.
They were like our love.
Love and trust were not enough to turn back
The wheels of life and death.
She faded like a mirage over the desert.
One morning like a bird she was gone
In the white scarves of death.
Now when the child
Whom she left in her memory
Cries and begs for her,
All I can do is pick him up
And hug him clumsily.
I have nothing to give him.
In our bedroom our pillows
Still lie side by side,
As we lay once.
I sit there by myself
And let the days grow dark.
I lie awake at night, sighing till daylight.
No matter how much I mourn
I shall never see her again.
They tell me her spirit
May haunt Mount Hagai
Under the eagles’ wings.
I struggle over the ridges
And climb to the summit.
I know all the time
That I shall never see her,
Not even so much as a faint quiver in the air.
All my longing, all my love
Will never make any difference.

Roger Bonair-Agard: Your Bed Is Too Small For Fucking And Poetry

I knew the bed would be too small
for all the things
I still want to dream about us
that we would toss
turn our way lose ourselves
in each other's limbs
and rut there all over again

too small for the full-bodied voluptuousness
we carry
too small for the full-contact fuck
we create
too small for the full slick sweat we surrender
too small for the grunts and the screams
we extract from each other
to small for the way those grunts
struggle up from our stomachs
somersaulting themselves into 'iloveyous'
and spasmodic cum shots

it is good we also have the floor
and the bathroom
and the tub
and the chair
and the desk
and the park
public spaces and the wide open savannas
of our imaginations

these places will have to substitute
offer room for the volume
of our fucking and our poetry
for the way this animal love
lurches monstrous up my chest
wanting to make you happy
and warm and unafraid
and free

so - get a bigger bed
one that can hold all the things
I still want to dream
but ready me a tiny corner on this one
so I can still get lost in you.

Reményik Sándor: A holt fenyő

A holt fenyő pirosba öltözik.Ha látsz egy foltot,
Egy rozsdavörös foltot
A haragos-zöld tenger közepén:
Ereszd le messzekémlő látcsöved,
S mondj egy imát a holtak üdveér'.
Az a halál.
Nem a lomberdők szelíd őszi dísze,
Amelyre új élet következik.
Ez a pirosban ünneplő halál,
Ez a dacos halál
Ez tudja már, hogy nincs feltámadás.
És mégis áll,
Halott bajnok az élő katonák közt.
Mivel másutt nincsen számára hely.

Pat Schneider: I Was Mean to You Today

Things were difficult
and I was impatient.
You were trying to explain
why I must reorganize the files
on my computer, why
they all have to have project numbers,
why I can't put them
where they've always been,
what the tax consultant said,
what you need for your report
to the Board of Directors,
and it boiled down to my files
have to be re-filed, and they
have to have titles with no more
than twelve letters to leave room
for project numbers,
and I said, Well, dammit.
And you said, Don't talk like that.

You sounded pained
and I was mean to you.
I was bored and tired
and mad, and you were
trying hard. Later,
I went out in the rain.
I went to the mall
and bought us both really
expensive pillows. Down
pillows with 100 per cent
cotton covers, 400 thread count.
I have lusted after them for years,
ever since Mama told me
that she asked Grandma,
who was 86 and dying,
"If you could have anything
in the world, what would it be?"
and Grandma answered,
"A down pillow" and Mama
didn't have enough money.
I bought two down pillows for us all,
to say I'm sorry.

Karinthy Frigyes: Méné, tekel…

Hallgasd meg, aztán mondd utánam ezt:
Versben mondom, hogy jobban megjegyezd.

Szívedbevésem és füledberágom:
Rossz volt embernek lenned a világon,

E korban, melynek mérlege hamis,
S megcsal holnap, mert megcsalt tegnap is.

Délben az ember megkisértetett,
Az éjben sírtak a kisértetek.

Siratták Krisztus gyötrelmes keresztjét,
De a gyilkost megint hősnek nevezték.

A férfi vért ivott s a nő velőt,
Künt a költő bőgött a bolt előtt.

Halottra adtak selymet és brokátot,
Az élő rongyos volt és vért okádott.

Virággal hintették a síri vermet,
Az élő künt a hó alatt didergett.

Hangos szóval esküdtek a koporsón,
Az élő halkan jajgatott a borsón.

Bámult a gyermek, nagy szemét kinyitva,
Az aggok hallgatták, gyáván sunyítva,

De szembeköpte mesterét a hitvány
Piszkos rüpők, a szemtelen tanitvány.

Hajók rohantak égő tűzveszélyben,
A ringyók cifra rongya szállt a szélben,

De a legszebb és a legékesebb
Szemétdombon rohadt el, mint az eb.

Most hát kezem tördelve, sírva kérlek,
Vigyázz, figyelj: készül a tiszta mérleg.

Tedd most szívedbe és füledbe el -
Az értelmét majd megtudod, ha kell.

MÉNÉ, TEKEL - ha érted, vagy nem érted,
Jegyezd meg jól: tenéked szól s teérted.

Egykoron sötétben elmondott dalom,
Mint lángírás, világít a falon.

Jegyezd meg jól: ma szürke szók ezek,
De élni fognak, hogyha én nem élek
S lesznek, ha nem leszek.

Csengő szól: gingalló,
röppenj már pillangó!
Pillangó messze jár,
volt-nincs nyár, vége már.

táncol a falevél,
züm-züm-züm, ez a szél!
Egy reggel itt a tél.

Al Zolynas: Postcard From Home

Sitting on the deck, bare feet
on the railing, I watch and listen to
this day spilling out its myriad flow of details, one
after another, one on top of another, seamlessly,
with no apologies, not the slightest backing off:
two ruby-throated humming birds
drinking their sugar water, distant dogs
barking, the sudden shriek
of wood surrendering to a neighbor’s power saw,
those boulders poking out of the hillside, another subdivision
materializing on the stripped land across the valley.
Each detail says “This!”
and has always and ever only said “This!”
Wish I were here.

Julie Cadwallader-Staub: Midlife

This is as far as the light
of my understanding
has carried me:
an October morning
a canoe built by hand
a quiet current

above me the trees arc
green and golden
against a cloudy sky

below me the river responds
with perfect reflection
a hundred feet deep
a hundred feet high.

To take a cup of this river
to drink its purple and gray
its golden and green

to see
a bend in the river up ahead
and still
say
yes.

Tao Te Ching: Verse 11

Thirty spokes are joined together in a wheel,
but it is the center hole that allows the wheel to function.
We mold clay into a pot,
but it is the emptiness inside that makes the vessel useful.
We fashion wood for a house,
but it is the emptiness inside that makes it livable.
We work with the substantial,
but the emptiness is what we use.

William Butler Yeats: Ezek felhők

Ezek felhők a bukó nap körül,
A fenség lecsukja égő szemét;
A nagy mű kicsik kezére kerül,
Míg meg nem dől a magas; majd a szép
Összhangba mind több csikorgás vegyül
S közös szintbe kerül a törmelék.
Így hát, barátom, ha majd kiderűl
A nagy harc után, hogy ez lett a vég,
Légy még büszkébb nagy társadra és örűlj,
Noha gyerekek gyűlnek csak köréd:
Ezek felhők a bukó nap körül,
A fenség körül, mely lecsukja szemét.

Pilinszky János: Milyen felemás

Milyen felemás érzések közt élünk,
milyen sokféle vonzások között,
pedig zuhanunk, mint a kő
egyenesen és egyértelműen.

Hányféle szégyen és képzelt dicsőség
hálójában evickélünk, pedig
napra kellene teregetnünk
mindazt, mi rejteni való.

Milyen
megkésve értjük meg, hogy a
szemek homálya pontosabb lehet
a lámpafénynél, és milyen
későn látjuk meg a világ
örökös térdre roskadását.

Elizabeth Jennings: Absence

I visited the place where we last met.Nothing was changed, the gardens were well-tended,
The fountains sprayed their usual steady jet;
There was no sign that anything had ended
And nothing to instruct me to forget.

The thoughtless birds that shook out of the trees,
Singing an ecstasy I could not share,
Played cunning in my thoughts. Surely in these
Pleasures there could not be a pain to bear
Or any discord shake the level breeze.

It was because the place was just the same
That made your absence seem a savage force,
For under all the gentleness there came
An earthquake tremor: Fountain, birds and grass
Were shaken by my thinking of your name.

Borbély András: Ahonnan indulsz

Ahonnan indulsz, ahova érkezel,
befon a szó, s a mondat kusza váza,
madarak szállnak, kiket ki érhet el,
ha szembe, vagy ha szélirányba szállnak.
Madarak röpte, szó, folyóban kövek,
amikre lép, ha átkel, vándor lába,
s miként a folyó, árad annyi szöveg,
bízhasd magad csak egy-két jó szavára,
mi átvezet a vízen, hogyha járnál.
– Nyughass, viszlek én vállaimon téged,
énekelhetsz, míg viszlek víznek átkán,
rogyott térdemben bízva bízz, ha élek.
Átjár az éj, mint vízcseppet fény átjár,
vagyok a szó, a híd, vagyok a kéreg.

Carl Sandburg: Explanations of Love

There is a place where love begins and a place
where love ends.

There is a touch of two hands that foils all dictionaries.

There is a look of eyes fierce as a big Bethlehem open hearth
furnace or a little green-fire acetylene torch.

There are single careless bywords portentous as a
big bend in the Mississippi River.

Hands, eyes, bywords--out of these love makes
battlegrounds and workshops.

There is a pair of shoes love wears and the coming
is a mystery.

There is a warning love sends and the cost of it
is never written till long afterward.

There are explanations of love in all languages
and not one found wiser than this:

There is a place where love begins and a place
where love ends--and love asks nothing.

Kányádi Sándor: Kuplé a Vörös villamosról

avagy abroncs nyolc plusz két pótkerékre

holtvágányra döcögött végül
a kopott vörös villamos
kalauz és vezető nélkül
döcögött holtvágányra végül
a kopott vörös villamos

nem volt rakva virágos néppel
bezzeg amikor érkezett
bíborló színben sok beszéddel
meg volt rakva virágos néppel
bezzeg amikor érkezett

vöröslött de amint utólag
utólag minden kiderül
bíborát nem a pirkadó nap
vértől vereslett mint utólag
utólag minden kiderül

mint a görög tragédiában
belül történt mi megesett
a színen csak siránkozás van
mint a görög tragédiában
belül történt mi megesett

hát sic tranzit gloria mundi
a dicsőség így múlik el
honnan lehetett volna tudni
hogy sic tranzit gloria mundi
a dicsőség így múlik el

s így állunk ismét mint az ujjunk
sok hite-volt-nincs nincstelen
a magunk kárán kell tanulnunk
ismét itt állunk mint az ujjunk
sok hite-volt-nincs nincstelen

s tülekedünk egymásnak esve
ha jön a volt-már villamos
sárgára avagy zöldre festve
tülekedünk egymásnak esve
ha jön a volt-már villamos

félre ne értsd a dalom testvér
nem sirató csak szomorú
nem szeretném ha lépre mennél
félre ne értsd ismétlem testvér
nem sirató csak szomorú

Mellékdal a pótkerekekre

de holtvágányra döcögött-e
vajon a veres villamos
eljárt-e az idő fölötte
és holtvágányra döcögött-e
vajon a veres villamos

s nem lesz-é vajon visszatérte
boldog aki nem éri meg
halomra halnak miatta s érte
most is s ha lenne visszatérte
boldog aki nem éri meg

Sárhelyi Erika: Biztos, ami biztos

Tudod, nem félek a haláltól,
csupán bosszant, hogy egyszer nem leszek.
Nem rendít meg, hogyha rám számol,
ha egyébként jól szólnak a negyedek.

Meglátod, haláli egy tánc lesz -
végre csapok egy jó kis görbe estét.
Ha akarod, te is ott lehetsz,
talán jobban bevésődik az emlék,

hogy voltam! - a létezésen túl -,
sőt, néha még éltem is egy keveset.
Másnap aztán - ha úgy alakul -
mesélj rólam. Ígérem, nem nevetek.

Howard Nelson: The Man in the Yard

My father told me once
that when he was about twenty
he had a new girlfriend, and once
they stopped by the house on the way
to somewhere, just a quick stop
to pick something up,
and my grandfather, who wasn't well—
it turned out he had TB and would die
at fifty-two—was sitting in a chair
in the small back yard, my father
knew he was out there, and it crossed
his mind that he should take his girlfriend
out back to meet him, but he
didn't, whether for embarrassment
at the sick, fading man
or just because he was in a hurry
to be off on his date, he didn't
say, but he told the little,
uneventful story anyway, and said
that he had always regretted
not doing that simple, courteous
thing, the sick man sitting in
the sun in the back yard would
have enjoyed meeting her, but
instead he sat out there alone
as they came and left, young
lovers going on a date. He
always regretted it, he said.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there.

Faludy György: Meditáció

Nem gondolkodás, mert az gyakran fájó
tépelődés, kegyetlen és kemény,
csak kép vagy látomás, amely magától
formálódik, és úgy lebeg elém:

szobor, szép nő, táj, jóbarát, kőszirtek,
virág, való vagy képzelt jelenet,
tűzfény tünt kandallókból, tenger – mindegy,
olykor változgat, olykor megremeg:

én mozdulatlanul lesem, szemlélem,
nem töprengek semmin se, de egészen
beleolvadok, szívom, teletöltöm

magam vele, de csak néző vagyok,
csendes, mohó néző – és ez a legnagyobb
öröm abból, hogy itt éltem a földön.

Taditional song from Senegal: [Listen to things more often than beings]

Listen to things more often than beings.
Hear the voice of the fire, hear the voice of the water,
Listen in the wind to the sighing of the bush:
This is the ancestors breathing.
Those who are dead are never gone;
The dead are not down in the earth:
They are in the trembling of the trees,
In the groaning of the woods,
In the water that runs, in the water that sleeps,
They are in the hut, they are in the crowd.
Those who are dead are not ever gone;
They are in the woman's breast, they are in the wailing of a child,
They are in the burning log and in the moaning rock.
They are in the weeping grasses, in the forest and the home.
Listen to things more often than beings.
Hear the voice of fire, hear the voice of water.
Listen in the wind to the sighing of the bush.
This is the ancestors breathing.
