Anna Kamieńska: The Moment of Reconciliation

Take in your hand the gray wafer of day
for the moment of reconciliation has arrived

Let there be reconciled
apple with knife

tree with fire

day with night

laughter with sobbing

nothingness with body

Let there be reconciled

loneliness with loneliness

Anna Kamieńska: Cassandra at a Loss

But how to warn the wise
how to caution them against their own wisdom
against the cool calm of moralists
How to warn those
who have already divided the world
into the black and the white
who have already shoved the condemned into hell
selecting them by color
quicker than the Lord Himself
They no longer know how to pardon anyone
to forgive anyone
these specialists of good and evil
How to warn the consistent
against their consistency
how to warn reason against reasons
how to show
dark depths of the feasible impossibility
They arranged
their world of words so nicely
and surrounded it with barbed irony
How to warn people against people
when they observe the world
without pain
and in their gaze everything
becomes a mere thing
How to convince them
to budge a bit
so that their own shadow
won't block the light

Anna Kamieńska: Doctor Edith Stein

Doctor Edith Stein from Breslau
flew out of a chimney at Auschwitz
on the ninth of August
of the year one thousand nine hundred
forty-two

She was going up straight and enormous into the sky
like the pillar of smoke from Abel's offering

She was silent
the best pupil of Husserl
who understood even before the master
that one should stop playing the philosopher
when God approaches

She went in silence
the wise sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
when two brown-shirt archangels
rattled on the door of the convent calling
Doctor Edith Stein

Did a short cry burst from her breast
when they tore off the black veil
of the one betrothed to the Lamb

Great Sister
I'd like to ask you so many quastions
especially when the grace of meaning
deserts the pages of days
and the leaves even of wise books

Why do you answer me stubbornly
with a simple writing of smoke
and I still afraid to understand

Anna Kamieńska: Conscience

You are alone with yourself
It’s not true
A whole court is with you
A prosecutor and a counsel for the defense
They quarrel about you
Guilty not guilty
Guilty says the prosecutor
You admit he is right
It’s natural
But the counsel for the defense
Talks quite sensibly too
The head turns from side to side
And only you don’t know
What to think of yourself
Always sentence yourself to death
And grant a reprieve
Finally you get bored
With the game of conscience
Sleep
In the morning God
Will give you back your soul
Freshly mended and laundered
Let’s just hope
You won’t get somebody else’s

Anna Kamieńska: Lack of Faith

Yes,
even when I don’t believe—
there is a place in me
inaccessible to unbelief,
a patch of wild grace,
a stubborn preserve,
impenetrable,
pain untouched by the sleeping body,
music that builds its nest in silence.

Anna Kamieńska: A Prayer That Will Be Answered

Lord let me suffer much
and then die

Let me walk through silence
and leave nothing behind not even fear

Make the world continue
let the ocean kiss the sand just as before

Let the grass stay green
so that the frogs can hide in it

so that someone can bury his face in it
and sob out his love

Make the day rise brightly
as if there were no more pain

And let my poem stand clear as a windowpane
bumped by a bumblebee's head

Anna Kamieńska: Dictionaries

How many poems sleep in dictionaries
buried like needles in hay
How many poets not yet born
rolled in tight webs of anger
How many tender confessions there
How many insults
How many falsehoods

And what unexplored
uninhabited
deserts of silences

Anna Kamienska: Funny

What's it like to be a human
the bird asked

I myself don't know
it's being held prisoner by your skin
while reaching infinity
being a captive of your scrap of time
while touching eternity
being hopelessly uncertain
and helplessly hopeful
being a needle of frost
and a handful of heat
breathing in the air
and choking wordlessly
it's being on fire
with a nest made of ashes
eating bread
while filling up on hunger
it's dying without love
it's loving through death

That's funny said the bird
and flew effortlessly up into the air

Anna Kamieńska: Difference

Tell me what’s the difference
between hope and waiting
because my heart doesn’t know
It constantly cuts itself on the glass of waiting
It constantly gets lost in the fog of hope

Anna Kamieńska: In a Hospital

By the side of an old woman
who is dying in a corridor
no one stands

Staring at the ceiling
for so many days already
she writes in the air with her finger

There are no tears no laments
no wringing of hands
not enough angels on duty

Some deaths are polite and quiet
as if somebody gave up his place
in a crowded tram
