Hafiz: Two puddles chatting

It rained during the night

And two puddles formed in the dark

And began chatting.

One said,

“It is so nice to at last be upon this earth

And to meet you as well,

But what will happen when

The brilliant Sun comes

And turns us back into spirit again?”

Dear ones,

Enjoy the night as much as you can.

Why ever trouble your heart with flight,

When you have just arrived

And your body is so full of warm desires.

And look:

So many meadows of soft hair are

Planted upon you.

Why ever trouble yourself with God

When He is so unjudging

And kind

Unless you are blessed and live

Near the circle of a

Perfect One?

Hafiz: Just In Case You Slip

Few can escape self made traps.

And when a person falls into one, it is
natural to call out for help.

If you attend such a plea, take someone
like me along as a safety rope or ladder...
Just in case you slip.

Hafiz: We Have Not Come To Take Prisoners

We have not come here to take prisoners,
But to surrender ever more deeply
To freedom and joy.

We have not come into this exquisite world
To hold ourselves hostage from love.

Run my dear,
From anything
That may not strengthen
Your precious budding wings.

Run like hell my dear,
From anyone likely
To put a sharp knife
Into the sacred, tender vision
Of your beautiful heart.

We have a duty to befriend
Those aspects of obedience
That stand outside of our house
And shout to our reason
“O please, O please,
Come out and play.”

For we have not come here to take prisoners
Or to confine our wondrous spirits,

But to experience ever and ever more deeply
Our divine courage, freedom and
Light!

Hafiz: If It Is Not Too Dark

Go for a walk, if it is not too dark.
Get some fresh air, try to smile.
Say something kind
To a safe-looking stranger, if one happens by.

Always exercise your heart's knowing.

You might as well attempt something real
Along this path:

Take your spouse or lover into your arms
The way you did when you first met.
Let tenderness pour from your eyes
The way the Sun gazes warmly on the earth.

Play a game with some children.
Extend yourself to a friend.
Sing a few ribald songs to your pets and plants -
Why not let them get drunk and wild!

Let's toast
Every rung we've climbed on Evolution's ladder.
Whisper, "I love you! I love you!"
To the whole mad world.

Let's stop reading about God -
We will never understand Him.

Jump to your feet, wave your fists,
Threaten and warn the whole Universe

That your heart can no longer live
Without real love!

Hafiz: These Beautiful Love Games

 Young lovers wisely say,

“Let’s try it from this angle,
Maybe something marvelous will happen,

Maybe three suns and two moons
Will roll out
From a hiding place in the body
Our passion has yet to ignite.”

Old lovers say,
“We can do it one more time,
How about from this longitude
And latitude –

Swinging from a rope tied to the ceiling,

Maybe a part of God
Is still hiding in a corner of your heart
Our devotion has yet to reveal.”

Bottom line:

Do not stop playing
These beautiful
Love
Games.

Hafiz: Stop Being So Religious

What
Do sad people have in
Common?
It seems
They have all built a shrine
To the past
And often go there
And do a strange wail and
Worship.
What is the beginning of
Happiness?
It is to stop being
So religious
Like That.

Hafiz: Beszélnünk kell e problémáról

Gyönyörű a Lény,
akit e gödörbe rejtettél.

Ezért éjszakánként
a kiásott föld puha halmai közt
kis tálkákban gyümölcsöt, magvakat,
tejet, bort hagyok neked.

Gyakran énekelek is.

Hiába, kedvesem,
mégsem bújsz elő.

Beleszerettem Valakibe,
aki benned rejtőzködik.

Beszélnünk kell e problémáról –

Különben
sosem szabadulsz tőlem.

Hafiz: The Sun Never Says

Even
After
All this time
The sun never says to the earth,

“You owe
Me.”

Look
What happens
With a love like that,
It lights the
Whole
Sky.

Hafiz: This Sky

This
Sky
Where we live
Is no place to lose your wings
So love, love
Love.

Hafiz: Szek ber an ademi...

Becsülendőbb az eb, mint az olyan ember,
Ki barátja keblén, szivén sebeket ver.
Megérdemli e mondás, hogy hitre leljen,
S a szivekben mindörökre gyököt verjen.
A mig magad tömöd drága falatokkal,
A hű kutya küszöbödön kivül koplal.
Bizony szégyen, hogy csak ebet látunk hűnek,
S az emberek egymás ellen hadat üznek.

(Erődi Béla fordítása)

Hafiz: Some fill with each good rain

There are different wells within your heart.
Some fill with each good rain,
Others are far too deep for that.
In one well
You have just a few precious cups of water,
That “love” is literally something of yourself,
It can grow as slow as a diamond
If it is lost.
Your love
Should never be offered to the mouth of a
Stranger,
Only to someone
Who has the valor and daring
To cut pieces of their soul off with a knife
Then weave them into a blanket
To protect you.
There are different wells within us.
Some fill with each good rain,
Others are far, far too deep
For that.

Hafiz: A great need

Out
Of a great need
We are all holding hands
And climbing.
Not loving is a letting go.
Listen,
The terrain around here
Is
Far too
Dangerous
For
That.

Hafiz: We Should Talk about This Problem

There is a Beautiful Creature
Living in a hole you have dug.

So at night
I set fruit and grains
And little pots of wine and milk
Beside your soft earthen mounds,

And I often sing.

But still, my dear,
You do not come out.

I have fallen in love with Someone
Who hides inside you.

We should talk about this problem---

Otherwise,
I will never leave you alone.
